Rest Is a Treatment Too
There was a time when I treated flare-ups like an inconvenience.
Something to push through. Ignore. Override.
Take the meds. Keep moving. Stay productive.
But my body doesn’t negotiate like that.
When I ignore the signals long enough, it doesn’t whisper anymore. It takes me down.
And maybe the most frustrating part is that many appointments focus on prescriptions and lab work, but rarely on the full orchestration of what may be working against the body—stress, overtraining, nervous system overload, inflammation, lack of rest, emotional strain, physical strain.
Sometimes the missing treatment isn’t more hustle.
Sometimes it’s rest.
Lately this has been key.
Not the perfect solution.
But I big jump toward the calm within.
Stress Isn’t Just Mental
Stress isn’t always worry or panic.
Sometimes stress is overdoing workouts.
Sometimes it’s poor sleep.
Sometimes it’s constant stimulation.
Sometimes it’s carrying too much for too long.
And for some autoimmune bodies, “healthy habits” can even become stress when pushed too hard.
“Couching It”
I’ve learned there are times when the smartest thing I can do is what I call couching it.
Yes—getting on the couch.
Resting without guilt.
Letting the nervous system settle.
Falling asleep if my body needs it.
Watching a comfort show.
Stopping the constant output.
It may not look productive from the outside.
But sometimes couching it is exactly what keeps me from spiraling further.
We live in a culture that praises pushing through.
But some of us don’t need more pushing.
We need more listening.
And sometimes healing doesn’t look like discipline.
Sometimes it looks like a blanket, a quiet room, and finally giving your body what it asked for hours ago.
